August 12, 2006 - Nesting season is officially over. Our mamas laid 192 nests this year! Well, OK, 192 nests located by turtle patrol. A few "wild" nests (ones not found during nesting patrol) have also hatched, bringing our total to nearly 200!!! Hatching season is well underway, so look out for loggerheads! July 23, 2006 - Kiawah now has 171 nests. The first nest evaluation was this morning, and it had 11 baby loggerheads to start hatching season. July 19, 2006 - Kiawah has 165 nests! With roughly two weeks to go, we are closing in on our normal average of 180 nests. The first nest hatched the week of July 19th as well, so watch out for baby loggerheads! July 2, 2006 - There are now 121 nests on Kiawah's beach. The mamas seem to be laying at a rate of just over 2 nests per night. June 28, 2006 - Kiawah is up to 111 nests! June 24, 2006 - There are 93 nests on Kiawah. The mamas nesting rate is just over 40% more than last year. June 16, 2006 - We now have 73 nests on Kiawah's beach. This is MUCH better than 2005. Here's hoping that this turtle season will be a banner year. June 8, 2006 - Beach renourishment at the east end of Kiawah officially began June 8th. Turtle patrol is still checking that portion of the beach, and will move any nests laid there. May 21, 2006 - The first nest is laid in Zone 5. May 17, 2006 - The first nest is laid on Kiawah! Go mamas! This is 10 days earlier than last year. April 25, 2006 - The annual training and t-shirt pick-up session was at 7:00 p.m. at the Sandcastle. The t-shirts are HOT PINK this year! You won't miss seeing turtle patrollers this summer! |
