Summer 2005This is the latest news about loggerheads on Kiawah Island.
|
| August 22, 2005 - The nesting patrol
has ceased for the season. Once they have four consecutive days of no
activity (no nests, no false crawls, etc.) they stop patrolling. But
don't worry! Our hatching patrols are out each morning, so if some
late comer arrives and nests, we will see it and contact the nesting folks!
The final nest total was 139, but four wild nests have already hatched, for
a grand total of 143. July 26, 2005 - Some nice folks from Pennsylvania helped us out by locating tracks near the tide line that we had not seen. There was no nest post though, so they were uncertain if the tracks were really turtle tracks. Sure enough, when we checked, there was a wild nest in the dunes! Not only that, but there were four babies poking their heads out of the top of the nest. The four wee ones were released, making July 26th a TEN TURTLE DAY! We are "officially" naming the wild nest Pennsylvania, in honor of its finders. Thanks folks! July 23, 2005 - Zone 5 has it's first hatch! Nest #7 hatched this morning, with one wee turtle poking it's head out of the top of the nest. Stay tuned for more hatches! July 22, 2005 - Kiawah's first nest hatches, Nest #8!!!! July 18, 2005 - Now Kiawah has 125 nests! Keep 'em coming mama turtles! July 6, 2005 - Kiawah now has 101 nests! We are right on track for a normal nesting season. This is a huge relief after last year's dismal showing. June 30, 2005 - As of this morning there are 85 nests on Kiawah's beach. With just over a month to go, we have surpassed the number of nests for all of last year. Hatching should start in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned! June 24, 2005 - We now have 68 nests. June 19, 2005 - Kiawah has 59 loggerhead nests on the beach. The number of nests located dropped slightly during the last patrol, but will hopefully pick back up soon. June 5, 2005 - We are up to 23 nests as of this morning. This is nearly DOUBLE the number we had at this time last year! Let's hope this means that there will be a normal number of nests this year. May 23, 2005 Nest #1 is laid on Kiawah's beach. April 26, 2005 is the annual training and t-shirt pick-up session at 7:00 p.m. at the Sandcastle. What color will the shirts be this year? |
